New York City Area Neighborhoods

Lower Manhattan

The southern tip of Manhattan is bordered by the Hudson River, East River, and Chambers Street to the North. At the lower tip Battery Park and Castle Clinton is the launching point for the Ferry to the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. Moving North from there takes you into the financial district and Wall Street, home of the New York Stock Exchange. Towards the East River is Southstreet Seaport and Pier 17, and the busy Civic Center of NY. Moving towards the Hudson from Wall Street brings you to Ground Zero, site of the former World Trade Center.

SoHo and TriBeCa

Above Chambers and below Canal Street is the triangle shaped area TriBeCa. Above Canal and Below Houston Street is the area called SoHo. The area is know for the unique cast iron architecture. There are many Downtown Art Galleries, Trendy Shops and Restaurants in this area.

Chinatown and Little Italy

Located SouthEast of SoHo and TriBeCa are two small ethnic neighborhoods, Little Italy and Chinatown. Chinatown is a fast growing area filed with shops and restaurants. Little Italy is North of Hester Street below Broome St. with great little Cafes and Bakery's. Be sure to visit the Museum of the Chinese in America.

Lower East Side

Moving from Bowery to the Williamsburg Bridge is the area known as the Lower East Side. This area was once know for the flood of Easter European Immigrants who settled here and lived in Tenement apartments. Today you can visit the Lower East Side Tenement Museum that recreates the living conditions of the period.

Greenwich Village

Below 14th Street is Greenwich Village which splits between the East and the West Village at roughly the Bowery. The entire area is often just referred to as the Village. It is an area rich in history where many writers artists and poets have made their homes. At night there is a very lively scene, small Clubs, Cafes, Bars, Restaurants, Off Broadway Theaters, and Jazz Clubs. There is a decided Bohemian element in the village.

Meatpacking District

Below 14th Just above Gansevoort St. is the historic Wholesale Meatpacking District. This area is a hotspot for Nightclubs and Bars.

Chelsea

Above 14th Street below 28th Street is the Chelsea area. The area is a center for Gay and Lesbians. It is home to many art galleries and artists who are moving into the area to escape the rising rents of the Village. Located on the Hudson is Chelsea Piers, an incredible 30 acre Sports Complex.

Herald Square

Named for the New York Herald this area used to be the rough spot of New York City know as the Tenderloin. Today Macy's and other retail Shops are the main attraction. Located where Broadway crosses 6th Ave.

Flatiron and Gramercy Park

South of 34th Street down to West 14th Street is the Gramercy and Flatiron District. Four Squares mark the area. During the 19th Century this was the place to live for wealthy New Yorkers. The area is home to some landmark buildings, Met Life Building, Theodore Roosevelt's Birthplace, Appellate Court Building, and the famous Flatiron Bldg.

Midtown Manhattan

Midtown Manhattan is bordered by Central Park at 59th Street on the North, 34th Street on the South, and 6th Ave. The area is home to many of New York's tourist attractions: Rockefeller Center, Grand Central Terminal, Empire State Building, and Chrysler Building.

Theater and Garment District

From Avenue of the Americas over to the Hudson between 39th and 59th is the Theater District and world famous Times Square. Broadway Theaters line the streets along with Spectacular Neon Signs.

Upper West Side

From West 58th Street up through West 98th is the Upper West Side Neighborhood. The area is bordered on the West by the Hudson River and by Central Park to the East. The area is home to Lincoln Center the cultural heart of the city.

Upper East Side

From East 59th Street up to 105th Street is the area know as the Upper East Side. The wealthiest area of Manhattan it is bordered on the West by Central Park and by the East River. The area is home to many Museums and older mansion, as well as upscale Madison Avenue shopping.

Harlem

Above Central Park is the Harlem and Morningside Heights area. The neighborhood is home to Columbia University, Grants Tomb, the Apollo Theater, and the Cathedral of St. John the Divine.
