The Gramercy Park area of New York City is an upscale residential area, between 14th and 23rd street, and 1st and 5th Avenue. It's located just above Union Square and east of the Flatiron District. Some of the attractions and landmarks on the map include the Birthplace of President Teddy Roosevelt, the famous triangular shaped Flatiron Building, designed by Chicago architect Daniel Burnham, and the Metropolitan Life Tower. In 1909 the Met Life was the tallest building in the world, and is modeled after the Campanile in Italy. The Empire State Building on 34th is located in Herald Square, which is part of the Garment District, and includes Penn Station, Macy's and the Flower District on 6th and West 23rd street.

Gramercy Park is a private park, however if you are staying at the Gramercy Park Hotel you can get access. Some of the highlites are the Samuel J. Tilden statue, his house is now the National Arts Club, and the statue of Edwin Booth. Edwin was a famous Shakespearean actor, brother to John Wilkes Booth, and founded the Players Club.

Madison Square Park, on Madison Ave and 23rd, is opened to the public is and is one of the city's best parks, filled with wonderful 19th century statues and great city views. Further down on Broadway is Union Square is home to the largest Greenmarket. It takes place year-round, every Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday from 8 AM - 6 PM. The arm and torch of the Statue of Liberty were once displayed in Madison Square Park to raise funds for construction of the statue and base.

Hotels in Gramercy and Flatirion and Hotels just below Grand Central Station are a lot less hectic, and a lot quieter than what you would find in Times Square.
